Why AI Assistants Can't Find Your Business
AI assistants do not "find" businesses the way Google ranks pages. They assemble answers from sources they can retrieve and cite — and if your site publishes no original statistics, no named experts, and no structured data, there is nothing in it worth quoting. That is why a business can rank on page one of Google and still never appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews.
The fix is not magic and it is not a plugin. It is a body of work: making the business citable. Princeton researchers measured exactly which tactics move AI visibility, and this post walks through what we have seen applying them across our own publishing and client work.
The answer AI engines actually reward
AI engines cite what they can parse and verify: original statistics (+30–40% visibility), named expert quotes (+41%), and inline sources (+115% on non-top-ranked pages) — per Princeton's GEO study (arXiv:2311.09735). Generic listicles and unsourced claims are what AI generates for free, and engines have no reason to cite you for repeating them.
These numbers come from controlled experiments, not vendor marketing. The Princeton team tested dozens of GEO tactics against real queries and measured citation frequency. The winning tactics all share one property: they add information that did not exist in the model's training data, forcing the engine to go find a source — ideally yours.
Why being on Google is not enough
Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked list of ten links. GEO optimizes for being quoted inside a synthesized paragraph. The mechanics overlap — crawlable pages, structured data, authority — but the content requirements diverge sharply.
A page optimized only for classic SEO might rank by matching keywords and earning links while saying nothing an engine can quote. A page optimized for GEO leads with a direct answer, attaches a real number to every claim, names a person or study behind each assertion, and wraps the whole thing in schema markup an engine can parse without guessing. The second page usually wins both: it ranks and it gets cited.
There is also a freshness effect. AI engines favour recently updated content — roughly a 26% visibility premium in comparative tests — because old pages are where stale statistics live. A pillar post from 2023 that has not been refreshed is effectively invisible to the 2026 citation set, which is why we refresh our own top posts quarterly and put the current year in titles.
AI engines cannot invent your revenue numbers, your client roster, or your project data. If those numbers do not exist in public, citable form, no engine can pass them on. The moat is what only you can publish.
What "citable" actually means, technically
Five things make a page citable, and none of them require a big budget:
- A direct answer in the first 40–60 words. Engines extract leading answers. Bury the answer under three paragraphs of preamble and the extractor takes the preamble.
- Original numbers. Your pricing model, your audit results, your conversion data, your client counts. Anything competitors cannot reproduce. This is the highest-value block on any page you publish.
- Named people with roles and sources. "According to our CEO, Yaroslav Nosovskyi" is parseable. "Experts say" is not.
- Structured data. Article, FAQPage, Organization, and Person schema remove the guesswork about who is speaking and what the page answers. It is free and it works.
- Third-party corroboration. Listings, profiles, reviews, and mentions on sites engines already trust. An engine that finds your name only on your own domain treats you as unverified.
Original data: what citable content looks like in practice
We audited our own publishing at Havenoro against the GEO tactics and rebuilt this blog around them. Every post now carries an answer block, three to five original statistics drawn from our estimator model or client work, a named CEO author, FAQ schema, and inline sources. The measurable effects we track monthly:
| Tactic | Measured effect | Cost to implement |
|---|---|---|
| Inline cited sources | +115% visibility | Link every factual claim to its source |
| Named expert quotations | +41% visibility | Attribute claims to a named person with a role |
| Original statistics | +30–40% visibility | Publish numbers only you can publish |
| FAQPage + Article schema | Parse reliability | Free; paste-ready JSON-LD per page |
| Freshness (quarterly refresh) | ~26% freshness premium | Update numbers and year in titles |
| Reddit participation | ~47% of Perplexity citations | Post the insight, not the link |
Effects from the Princeton GEO study (arXiv:2311.09735) and Perplexity citation-share analyses. Costs are Havenoro's own implementation effort.
Corroborating signal from the industry side: brands that get cited in AI answers see roughly +35% organic click-through and +91% paid click-through on the same queries, because a citation pre-qualifies the click. The engine has already vouched for you before the visitor arrives.
How to check whether AI engines know you exist
Do not guess. Measure. Two numbers, tracked monthly, thirty minutes of work:
- Present rate — of your ten most valuable buyer prompts, how many produce an AI answer at all.
- Cited rate — when an answer appears, how often your business is named in it.
Run the prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity first; add Gemini and Copilot as capacity allows. Log the results in a spreadsheet with dates. AI answers are non-deterministic, so a single check is noise — only the month-over-month trend is signal. Pair this with GA4 referral filters for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, and claude.ai, and watch branded search volume in Google Search Console. Branded query lift is the slowest, clearest sign that the citation work is compounding.
Common mistakes
- Publishing AI-generated listicles. "10 Web Design Tips" is content an engine can produce instantly and has no reason to cite. Every unsourced claim is invisible by definition.
- Optimizing only for Google's ten blue links. Ranking and being cited are different games with overlapping mechanics. A pure-SEO content plan leaves the citation layer on the table.
- Ignoring Reddit because "it is not professional." Nearly half of Perplexity's citations originate there. One thorough, honest answer in the right thread outperforms a dozen blog posts nobody links to.
- Treating GEO as a one-time setup. Schemas and sitemaps are the floor, not the ceiling. Citation share compounds with publishing cadence and decays without refreshes — the same freshness curve that governs search.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?
AI assistants generate answers from sources they can retrieve and parse. If your site has no original statistics, no named experts, no structured data, and no third-party citations, there is nothing citable to include. Being on Google is not the same as being quotable by an AI engine.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of making your content citable by AI assistants: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews. It combines technical SEO, original data, expert quotes, and structured data so that when an engine assembles an answer, your business is in the source set.
What tactics actually increase AI citations?
Princeton research (arXiv:2311.09735) measured the winners: adding cited sources improved visibility by up to 115% on non-top-ranked pages, named expert quotations by 41%, and original statistics by 30 to 40%. AI engines cannot generate original data; they cite what exists.
Do I still need SEO if I want to appear in AI answers?
Yes. GEO and SEO overlap heavily: crawlable pages, structured data, fast performance, and authority signals still apply. The difference is that GEO also requires citable content — original numbers, named experts, and quotable claims — that classic SEO often omits.
How do I check if AI assistants mention my business?
Ask the assistants directly. Run your ten most important buyer prompts through ChatGPT and Perplexity monthly and log two numbers: how often an AI answer appears for that prompt (present rate) and how often you are named in it (cited rate). Single checks are noise; only the rolling trend means anything.
Does Reddit really affect AI citations?
Yes, measurably. Roughly 47% of Perplexity's citations and 21% of Google AI Overview citations come from Reddit threads. One thorough, honest answer in a relevant subreddit can feed AI answers for years and rank in Google on its own. It is the cheapest citation channel available.
How long does it take to get cited by AI engines?
Technical fixes — structured data, crawlability, sitemaps — can register within weeks. Authority and citation patterns take months, because engines re-crawl and re-evaluate on their own schedules. Branded search lift is the slowest but clearest signal that GEO is compounding.
